"In Z Axis Follies, Adam Collignon melds diverse components—performance, projected video, digital imagery, sculpture, text, and sound—to create his own distinctive theatrical revue. The mesmerizing sequences of his 18-minute piece, unfolding across four tilted screens, are channeled by The Conductor, an otherworldly, white-suited character played by the artist. This persona, conceived over years in live performances, here assumes a level of refinement that powerfully bolsters The Conductor’s roles as master of ceremonies and alchemist, capable of transmuting material processes into substantive events. Ever more effectively, Collignon develops his character and its performative interactions with object and image to probe the nature of appearance, the limits of perception, and the “crisis and ecstasy” of making art." - Ashley Kistler, Director, Anderson Gallery
